Please submit a set of pings and traceroutes as follows: _________________________________________________________________________ On a Wednesday of a given week obtain: * a set of pings for *every* DALnet server done at 3am, 12pm and 10pm EST (that's 3 pings per DALnet server, one ping at each of those times) * a set of traceroutes for *every* DALnet server done at 3am, 12pm and 10pm EST (that's 3 traceroutes per DALnet server, one traceroute at each of those times) REPEAT THE ABOVE PROCEDURE FOR THE SATURDAY OF THE SAME WEEK. __________________________________________________________________________ At the end you should have 2 sets of 3 pings and traceroutes for *every* server. Please also include ONLY the summary results for pings, and seperate the ping results by day and time in your application form; traceroutes may be lumped together. A ping summary is of the form: ----server.dal.net ping statistics---- 100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max = 55.037/62.314/186.191 ms Pings must have the following minimum characteristics: * 100 data packets * 1024 bytes per packet Applications without all of this information will not be accepted. ------------------------------- cut here ------------------------------- *** DALnet Requirements for you and your Server *** Requirements: 1. You MUST be able to run this server 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You have read, understood, and agreed to abide by the DALnet Policies & Procedures document. By submitting an application you agree to be bound by the conditions stated herein. DALnet does not accept co-admin'ed servers under any circumstance. 2. Your machine should meet the requirements listed below. * PII 233 class or better CPU * 96MB RAM *if* the machine is dedicated to irc, more if it isn't * a 1 gig (or more) hard drive is suggested * US and Canada servers must: - have multiple T1's (2 or more) - be multihomed Connectivity should be as follows as follows: The server must have either a dedicated LAN connection of 10Mbps speed or higher (for example, ethernet to a switch) or a shared LAN connection of 100Mbps or higher (for example, fast ethernet to a hub). The LAN the server is on must have available outbound bandwidth to the rest of the Internet of at least 4 Mbps. The management of the server must commit to allowing DALnet to use at least 1.5 Mbps of their available outbound bandwidth. * all other servers must have 512K or better connections * must be able to hold at least 2500 clients if in the US/Canada, 2000 clients otherwise * it is strongly recommended that FreeBSD be used as the OS on x86 platforms * all DALnet servers are required to rely on a secure DNS as a resolver. At this time, the only name server software that is safe from the various forms of attack on the internet is BIND version 8.2.2p5 from the Internet Software Consortium (www.isc.org). * if your server is intended to be a client server then, upon linking, you MUST be ready to carry the full client load indicated in the application immediately. You must agree to be in the irc.dal.net pool, especially if you are a US or Canadian server. Servers from Europe/Asia should be prepared to be in the irc.eu.dal.net pool. Please note that this is not asking for a guarantee that you will be able to hold X number of clients, merely that you agree for your server to be placed under high client load conditions. If your server is unable to handle those conditions, you will be expected to make the necessary adjustments to your setup in order to rectify the problem. 3. This server must be available for the long term. If you intend on taking this server down in the "near future", please do not apply. You can use your best judgement on our definition of "near future". We're looking for servers that will be RELIABLE. 4. You must be a member of the main DALnet mailing list for at least 30 days prior to filling out this application. 5. If for any reason any of information contained in section 1 of your application will change for any reason, you MUST notify the DALnet administrative mailing list IMMEDIATELY. Notification MUST be made BEFORE any changes are made, with at least one week notice before the change is made. Failure to do so is grounds for delinking your server. After you notify the list, if no other server admin voices any objection within the one week notification period, that change will be deemed acceptable. 6. You hold harmless all those involved in DALnet, including but not limited to, its server admins, hub admins and users. DALnet its server admins, opers and users will not be held responsible for any financial loss incurred by you prior to, during, and/or after the link process (CFD/CFV). 7. You must be able to run xntpd on your server machine. This is to assure that the timestamps your server makes coincides with all of the other servers on DALnet. DO NOT PROCEED WITH THIS APPLICATION UNTIL YOU HAVE FULFILLED THESE REQUIREMENTS. SUBMISSION OF YOUR APPLICATION SIGNIFIES IMPLICIT AGREEMENT WITH THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED HERIN.
